The next government must act urgently to protect the safety and wellbeing of pregnant women and mothers in prison. They should:

1. Implement the Female Offender Strategy to reduce the number of women in prison

2. End the imprisonment of pregnant women and new mothers in all but the most exceptional of cases

3. Create a mandatory framework for the care of pregnant women and all mothers of children under two in custody, including those separated from their infants

4. Establish a national multi-disciplinary board to scrutinise and lead improvements in the healthcare provided to women in prison.

We are looking forward to working with the new administration on all four of these points as a matter of priority.
