At Birth Companions, we are deeply concerned by the reports surrounding Bella May Culley, a young British woman currently imprisoned in Georgia while pregnant.

The details emerging from her case - particularly the lack of access to medical care and the challenges she faces in a foreign prison system - are profoundly troubling.

Every woman, regardless of her circumstances, has the right to safe, respectful, and compassionate maternity care.

This is a fundamental principle we uphold in our work with women in the criminal justice system here in England and Wales, and it must extend beyond borders.

We urge the UK Government and relevant authorities to act swiftly to safeguard Bella’s health and human rights.
