This Birth Companions spotlight paper looks at the issues and disparities faced by women experiencing or at risk of separation from their babies through the perinatal period.

In this paper we show that pregnant women and new mothers at risk of and experiencing the removal of their babies at or shortly after birth are a particularly vulnerable group, and that specialist focus and dedicated services are required to improve outcomes, reduce trauma, and disrupt intergenerational cycles of disadvantage.

We also discuss recent policy developments that have presented opportunities for increased focus on this group of women, and for the improvement of the care they and their babies receive
