We are thrilled to announce that Leah Hazard, midwife, author and women’s health advocate, has joined Birth Companions as an Ambassador.
Leah grew up in the United States and studied English Literature at Harvard before moving to the UK in 1999 to pursue a career in the arts and media. After earning her master’s degree in Directing and working for several years in television, the births of Leah’s daughters inspired a profound change of direction.
She retrained as a doula, supporting families in home and hospital births for six years, before completing her midwifery degree. Since qualifying in 2013, Leah has worked across a range of clinical settings as an NHS Scotland midwife, welcoming hundreds of babies and helping many more families on their journeys.
Leah’s bestselling memoir, Hard Pushed: A Midwife’s Story, was a Sunday Times bestseller, bringing the complexity of modern midwifery into the public eye. Her next book, Womb: The Inside Story of Where We All Began, was 2023 Scottish Book of the Year and translated into 19 languages. Leah is currently working on her next book, Birth Wars: The Hidden Battles Changing Our Bodies and Our World, which will be published by Penguin Press in 2026.
Alongside her writing, Leah is a trustee of Scottish charity Amma Birth Companions and a frequent commentator on women’s health across print and broadcast media. Her voice and expertise are helping to drive vital conversations about equity, care, and the power of women’s stories in shaping better maternity systems.
We are honoured to welcome Leah as an ambassador for Birth Companions, joining us in our mission to create lasting change for women and babies facing disadvantage.
