HMPPS Think Child Campaign 2026: Recognising and Responding to Pregnancy and Early Motherhood

Birth Companions takes part in HM Prison & Probation Service's (HMPPS) Think Child Campaign with a session on pregnancy and early motherhood in the criminal justice system.

The first 1001 days – from conception to a child's second birthday – is a critical time in laying the foundations for children’s long term health and wellbeing. It is also a vital window of opportunity for safeguarding, support and early intervention.

At this event, part of HM Prison and Probation Service’s Think Child campaign, members of the Birth Companions team will explore why this period is so significant and how practitioners across the criminal justice system and beyond can “Think Child” when working with families pre-birth and during early motherhood.

Drawing on evidence, policy and lived experience, the session will examine how probation, prisons and partner agencies can better recognise and respond to the needs of pregnant women, mothers, and their infants.

The event will also consider the overlap between criminal justice and social care, highlight learning from case reviews, and reflect on how system changes can improve practice.

Speakers:

  • Kirsty Kitchen, Director of the Birth Companions Institute
  • Tanya Tracey, Criminal Justice Services Manager, Birth Companions
  • Sam, Member of Birth Companions Lived Experience Team
