Birth Companions was founded in March 1996 to support pregnant women and new mothers in the harsh environment of Holloway Prison.
We have seen what is possible when women are listened to, heard and take power into their own hands.
We continue to see where systems fail, and why change remains urgent.

Our 30th anniversary timeline traces key milestones, from our beginnings right through to today.
It shows our evolution from a small band of volunteers in 1996 to a leading national voice on care, equity and justice in pregnancy and early motherhood, and demonstrates the real world impacts of our work to change policy and practice.
